Do you know anything more about this structure? It's obviously not traditional and I don't remember ever seeing it.

I would call it "neo-traditional". You are right JL, the style isn't traditional, however the idea of encircling something with a retaining wall is classic Gulf-think. Also, castles have a pretty recent history here, although this one in particular has borrowed a European design.

I have seen similar structures surrounding farms out in the desert, but this one is near the education city complex near Rayyan. I don't know what it is, but if I were to venture a guess I would say that it will be a school.

Echo - actually you wouldn't. The British had no significant effect on the architecture when they had an interest in Qatar, though the Turks certainly did. The architecture of this photo is quite alien to Qatar.

What you're looking at is pastiche - somebody's attempt to bring in what they believe Islamic architecture is like. There were round towers in Qatar, but they were battered. There was machicolation, but not like that. There were few round headed arches as most openings were trabeated.

This is what makes Qatar so interesting these days. There is an enormous amount of creativity and license regarding architecture. You never know what you'll see next.
